Text Criticism in Jonah I want us to look at
the more significant variants in Jonah (Jonah 2:4 and 2:5) and make
sure that we can construct arguments for both the MT and for the proposed
annotations. On Tuesday I will provide you with some handouts of discussions
in commentaries on the more significant variants. Please read through these
discussions and construct arguments for each position. Because time is short,
I do not want us to spend time trying to convince one another about which
reading is the best reading. I am more concerned with you being able to
construct the best argument for both sides. Only when both sides of the
argument are clearly outlined does it make sense to begin choosing which
reading is best. Please write your arguments out. BHS Critical Apparatus for Jonah There are about 14 entries in the critical apparatus of the BHS for Jonah. Go through each of these and make sure you are able to explain the text critical annotations for each entry. Scotts A Simiplified Guide to the BHS will give you all of the Latin you need to work through this. I would encourage you to write this out. |

Handout: Principles and Practice of Textual Criticism from Brotzman, Ellis R. Old Testament Textual Criticism: A Practical Introduction, Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker, 1994. This is a fairly
short chapter, just ten pages. So read the whole chapter, paying particular
attention to the principles that are discussed in the section entitled, Evaluation
of Variants on pages 126129. Handout: Textual Commentary on the Book of Ruth from Brotzman, Ellis R. Old Testament Textual Criticism: A Practical Introduction, Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker, 1994. In addition, I would
like you to read through Brotzmans discussions of
a handful of the textual variants in the first chapter of Ruth. This will
give you some sense of how the principles of textual criticism are applied in
specific situations. I will give you pages 13339 but do not read everything
in these pages, just the following variants: 1:1a, 1:1b; 1:14a; 1:19a,
1:19b. As you follow the
discussions make sure you can decipher the notations in the BHS for each
variant. I will also provide
you with a copy of the first page of Ruth from the BHS. |

Thursday 28 April 2005 Return to Homework

Class Exam: |
The class exam will focus upon two
main areas translation and parsing of verbal forms, though of course a host
of other skills and information will be assessed within these two main areas:
ability to figure out the triconsonantal root,
familiarity with the BDB. I havent yet decided but I think it likely that
there will be a few questions on grammar and syntax and certain
constructions, e.g., the function of a vav
consecutive form or of an infinitive construct preceded by a bound
preposition, etc. At this point, I am looking
primarily at going with sight passages and providing translation helps for
infrequent words or forms, for proper names, etc. The translation helps will
not, however, always give you the translation but will provide you with
enough information to allow you to apply your knowledge. For example, I might
simply give the triconsonantal root for a verb
expecting you to figure out the form and/or be able to look it up in the dictionary.
I might, for instance, tell you that something is spelled defectively if it
is a familiar word that looks foreign because it has lost its vowel letter.
As for pronominal suffixes on verbs, I do not plan on glossing every verb
form that has a pronominal suffix, even if we havent covered it specifically
in class, but only those that are particularly confusing because in many
cases I think that if you are familiar enough with your strong verb
conjugations you will be able to see that a verb form has a pronominal
suffix. |

Hebrew Poetry Jonah 2:310 We are going to
focus upon some aspects of Hebrew poetry with special reference to Jonah 2.
So please spend some significant time reviewing Jonah 2; the more familiar
you are with the Hebrew of Jonah 2 the more fruitful will be our class. I
would encourage you to read through Jonah 2 everyday this week and spend time
looking at potential structural and poetic features of Jonah (e.g.,
parallelism). |

Since we are having an exam this week, I am not going to introduce any new material. Instead I want to review, revise, and consolidate everything that we have been focusing upon this semester, with most of the attention being paid to the strong verb in all of its stems and conjugations. There is just one week left before Easter break; so lets hang in there for one more week. Look below at Thursday to see the sorts of things I plan on having you do for the exam and some suggestions for review. |

Thursday 24 March 2005 Return to Homework
Index |
|
|
The class exam will focus upon
three areas: I havent designed the exam yet,
and so I may make some changes but the following will give you a fairly good
idea of what sorts of things will be expected. A.
Parsing and Translation All Stems (Answer 10 out of 13)
Be able to parse any strong verb, in any of its stems and in any of its
forms.
In terms of preparation, you can go through the BasicsWB
and work through the parsing sections of each of the chapters that we did. B.
Inflection Qal, Niphal, Piel, Hiphil (Answer 8 out of 10)
Be able to inflect any strong verb, in any of its stems and in any of its
forms.
This will take two forms. (1) I will you a Hebrew root and ask you to, e.g.,
form the Hiphil Imperfect 2MS. (2) I will give you an English translation,
e.g., I was slaughtered, and ask you to give the Hebrew in the appropriate
form. This will involve knowing vocabulary and what the different stems do,
e.g., causative and intensive, active and passive, etc.
In terms of preparation, practice writing out all of the verbal paradigms.
Practice sheets are available here. You
may also want to go through the BasicsWB and work
through the Inflection and perhaps the Hebrew Composition sections of the
chapters that we did. Often I had you do the odd and so the even are
available for you.
Based upon what we have done in class, the imperfect seems to be the most
difficult, primarily with respect to the vowels, so this would be an area to
practice on.
Here are the two PowerPoint presentations I have used this week to prepare
you for inflecting: Consolidating the Perfect and Inflecting
the Perfect and the Imperfect
Also see this website
with its flash animations may be of help in terms of inflecting verbs. C. Translation Sight Passages and Jonah 1
Be prepared to translate phrases, sentences, and longer passages. Now while
the Parsing and Inflection sections will focus upon strong verbs, the
Translation section will include weak verbs as well, those that we have
repeatedly come across. You will also remember that we spent a week on weak
verbs in the Qal so those are fair game as well.
Some of what you translate you will have seen before, either in your homework
or in Jonah; there will also be some sight passages that you have not seen.
In terms of preparation, I would spend some time translating. Again, there
are plenty of translation exercises available in the BasicsWB
that you can use. Also review Jonah 1. NOTE: You will
be allowed to use your BDB lexicon on the translation section. So make sure you can easily find your way around the
BDB. No other materials or lexicons will be allowed. Vocabulary. I would also make sure that you are up to speed with
your vocabulary through Week 6. |
