Wednesday — 5 Iyyar 5766

Preparation:

Read the following chapters from Ellis R. Brotzman, Old Testament Textual Criticism: A Practical Introduction (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker, 1994).

Read the whole chapter to gain the larger perspective, and then reread in more detail the pages that are identified. You may find the charts particularly useful as you work through these pages. I know there is a lot of information here. One of the things I am wanting you to get a handle on is the process of transmission and in particular the relationship of the Hebrew versions and the Greek versions which is quite complex.

•  2: Transmission of the Old Testament in Hebrew (esp. pp. 42–46, 55–62)

•  3: Ancient Versions of the Old Testament (esp. pp. 72–80)

What to Bring:

All of the handouts that I have given you regarding Text Criticism; your notes and questions.

Thursday — 4 May 2006                                                                                                             5766  יוֹם שְׁלִישִׁי –– וׄ אִיָּר

Thursday — 6 Iyyar 5766

Reading:

Read the following chapters from Ellis R. Brotzman, Old Testament Textual Criticism: A Practical Introduction (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker, 1994).

•  7:  Principles and Practice of Textual Criticism.  This is a fairly short chapter, just ten pages. So read the whole chapter, paying particular attention to the principles that are discussed in the section entitled, Evaluation of Variants on pages 126–129.

• 8: Textual Commentary on the Book of Ruth.  In addition, I would like you to read through Brotzman’s discussions of a handful of the textual variants in the first chapter of Ruth. This will give you some sense of how the principles of textual criticism are applied in specific situations. I will give you pages 133–39 but do not read everything in these pages, just the following variants: 1:1a, 1:1b; 1:14a; 1:19a, 1:19b.

• As you follow the discussions make sure you can decipher the notations in the BHS for each variant. I will also provide you with a copy of the first page of Ruth from the BHS.

Class Exam:

The class exam will focus upon two main areas — translation and parsing of verbal forms, though of course a host of other skills and information will be assessed within these two main areas: ability to figure out the tri-consonantal root, familiarity with the BDB.

The exam will consist of two parts.

     A. Parsing — Worth 25% of the Exam. The first part of the exam is a parsing section in which you will be responsible for parsing 10 out of the 14 verb forms. All of the verb forms will occur in the translation section of the exam.

     B. Parsing — Worth 75% of the Exam. The second part of the exam is a translation section in which you will be responsible for translating into idiomatic English about 9–10 verses from the same passage in the Old Testament. I will provide some translation helps for infrequent words or forms, for proper names, etc. The translation helps will not, however, always give you the translation but will provide you with enough information to allow you to apply your knowledge. For example, I might simply give the tri-consonantal root for a verb expecting you to figure out the form and/or be able to look it up in BDB. I might, for instance, tell you that something is spelled defectively if it is a familiar word that looks foreign because it has lost its vowel letter. As for pronominal suffixes on verbs, I do not plan on glossing every verb form that has a pronominal suffix, even if we haven’t covered it specifically in class, but only those that are particularly confusing because in many cases I think that if you are familiar enough with your strong verb conjugations you will be able to see that a verb form has a pronominal suffix.

NOTE. You MAY use your BDB lexicon on all parts of the exam.

Revision
Suggestions

Here are a few suggestions for revision. Need I add the disclaimer that these are suggestions and do not necessarily imply that these are the only things you might need to work on.

•  For practice with recognizing and parsing weak verbs, I would suggest some of sections of Linda S. Haney’s “Verb Practice,” in particular 15–20 or maybe just 17–20. See here.

•  For translation practice, I would recommend Exodus 6:2–8, Deuteronomy 6:4–9, and Nehemiah 9:9–15, all of which are in your BasicsWB, pp. 297–302.

•  And of course, it is always important to keep up on your vocabulary.
